Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, and Agender (LGBTQIA+) individuals are a valuable part of our communities. Oaks Integrated Care welcomes and celebrates diversity, inclusion and equality throughout our organization from our employees to the individuals and families we serve. For those who identify as LGBTQIA+, it’s important to recognize how the challenges they face can impact their mental health.
According to Mental Health America, 4.5% of the U.S. population identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, and over 39% of those individuals reported having a mental illness in the past year. That is nearly 5.8 million people. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, transgender individuals are nearly four times as likely as cisgender individuals to experience a mental health condition.
A variety of risk factors can be associated with the LGBTQIA+ experience. The societal act of “coming out,” in which they share their sexual orientation or gender identity, can be difficult or even traumatic for those who do not have a supportive community of family or friends. Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community also face socioeconomic and cultural conditions after coming out, such as discrimination, prejudice, or rejection.
Forms of identity-based discrimination including stereotyping, bullying, harassment, emotional abuse, and even physical assault contribute to a significantly heightened risk for PTSD among individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community. Traumatic events can negatively impact mental health and all aspects of life such as relationships, family, workplace, and physical health.
Finding the right support system is key to navigating inclusive and proper mental health care for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Start by researching professional providers, and gather referrals from local health centers and community groups. From there, contact a mental health provider, and a relationship can be built to create a safe and trustworthy space.
