Research has shown that LGBTQ+ youth have higher rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and emotional distress than heterosexual youth. But they’re not more prone to mental health conditions because of their identity. LGBTQ+ youth often face mental health challenges due to:

  • Bullying and harassment
  • Stigma
  • Family rejection or lack of support
  • Discrimination and identity non-affirmation
  • Lack of access to care

Daily life in settings where people aren’t accepting of LGBTQ+ youth can cause them to carry a heavy burden of chronic stress that affects their well-being. Family acceptance and support are critical to reducing the risk of anxiety, depression, isolation, and suicide.

How Families Can Show Acceptance and Support of LGBTQ+ Youth

Communication. Listen without judgment or interruption. Instead of criticizing or trying to “fix” the situation, ask open-ended questions and let them express their thoughts and feelings. Avoid pressuring them to come out before they’re ready or share more than they’re comfortable with.

Gratitude and Love. Thank them for sharing how they feel and trusting you. Tell them you love them and you’re always here for them. Make this a regular habit to reinforce your support.

Validation. Tell them you support who they are and how they express themselves. Remind them that they’re the same person they’ve always been.

Names and Pronouns. Using an LGBTQ+ youth’s chosen name and pronouns shows respect and affirmation. Make a conscious effort to adapt how you speak with the right names and pronouns. If you make a mistake, apologize and learn.

Learning. You don’t need all the answers right now. Ask respectful questions and educate yourself. Also, consider seeking support so you can process your own feelings and better understand what it means to be an LGBTQ+ youth.

Advocacy and Safety. Watch for signs of bullying, harassment, and discrimination in school, online, and in social settings, and put a stop to slurs and jokes immediately. Encourage your child to share these experiences and take action as a parent or caregiver to protect them.

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, when we celebrate the history and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community and recognize ongoing challenges. We can help your child process their feelings in a safe, judgment-free setting and work through mental health challenges that might be linked to their identity.
