As we navigate the transition out of the virtual world, the return of face-to-face interaction can influence mental health. Social isolation is a serious health challenge that can be damaging to mental health. Therefore, the quality of our connections with one another can boost general happiness and decrease loneliness levels. For Mental Health Awareness Month this May, we believe in ensuring every person has access to resources and support for leading a healthy life. Here are 6 ways you can create more meaningful connections to feel motivated and driven to achieve a more fulfilling lifestyle:
1) Start with honesty.
Some of the best conversations begin with honesty to break down barriers. Sharing authentic experiences can increase empathy levels between one another. Meaningful connections are driven by openness and vulnerability, both of which are best created from honest conversations.
2) Find common interests.
Relationships are often built off of common ground. Explore topics like the arts, sports, or your favorite movies and TV shows. A shared love for something can evoke a mutual conversation topic and lead to a deeper connection.
3) Be mindful of others’ needs.
Try something as simple as helping a neighbor carry their groceries or remembering what friends share with you to show you care about their lives. Stay attentive to simple needs such as their emotions, physical health, and overall wellbeing.
4) Ask worthwhile questions.
Building conversation up with simple yet deep questions can help create a comfortable space for both of you to open up. Try sharing your biggest fears or most exciting dreams with your friend to show you feel comfortable discussing something important about yourself, inviting your friend to do the same.
5) Dive into deeper conversations.
While sometimes daunting, vulnerability can help improve the level of connections. It is not always about the deepest subject, rather the genuineness of your conversation to help you both feel engaged and connected.
6) Be patient.
Friendships often happen over time. To create a meaningful connection, put in the time to consistently support one another. Ensure that you are open to investing the time into building a friendship.
Building meaningful connections can sometimes be a long and challenging process. The more time two people spend together, the more likely they are to create a friendship. As we approach the return of face-to-face interactions, keep in mind that having those true friendships helps to improve both physical and mental health.
