September is National Recovery Month, a time to celebrate the successes made by those in recovery and recognize health improvements which enable those battling mental health challenges or substance abuse to live a healthy and rewarding life. This year’s theme, “Recovery is For Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community,” reminds those facing recovery of the abundance of groups and community members surrounding their journey.
Oaks Integrated Care offers caring and compassionate programs to those struggling with addiction. Our goal is to offer hope for long-term recovery and a chance to end the revolving door of treatment.
“And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I built my life.”
No journey to recovery is the same. Matthew came to Oaks during his second incarceration feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to even begin the journey toward sobriety. As far back as he could remember, drugs and alcohol played a predominant role in his life. We welcomed him to our Opioid Overdose Recovery Program (OORP) with open arms, emphasizing the need for the right treatment, resources and continuing care.
Matthew began working with peers weekly to practice individualized coping techniques. He remained a willing and dedicated participant, continuing to ask questions that furthered his journey to recovery. From learning mindfulness to setting personal goals, he overcame frustrations and kept an open mind.
Today, Matthew has been released from jail and continues his personal recovery daily to stay clean and sober. Through all the natural challenges of recovery, he remains persistent and dedicated. When sharing his experience and journey, he recounts the effects of the process, stating, “…and so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I built my life.”
