Signs of mental illness can be difficult to recognize. Many are dismissed as temporary stress associated with a rough patch, a bad week, not sleeping well, or struggling with loss.

If symptoms subside within a couple weeks, they could very well just be a temporary result of difficult circumstances. If they remain persistent for more than two weeks or become worse, they could be signs of stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

And that’s okay. You might just need a little support to understand the causes and learn coping skills to start feeling like yourself again. Here are some early signs your mental health may need attention.

Mood Swings and Extreme Emotional Changes

If you find yourself snapping or feeling on edge more than usual, becoming overwhelmed or irritable over seemingly small things, or shifting quickly from high energy and joy to low energy and deep sadness, these could be signs your mental health needs attention.

Persistent Fatigue

We all feel tired from time to time. But feeling exhausted regardless of how much you sleep and rest should not be dismissed as being “just kind of tired lately.”

Emotional Numbness

Losing interest or joy in things that make you happy can be an early sign of depression or withdrawal. You may also find yourself canceling plans, pulling away from friends and family, and isolating.

Changing Sleep Patterns

Poor sleep can contribute to many health conditions, including mental illness. Difficulty falling asleep, frequently waking up at night, or sleeping far more than usual can have underlying mental and emotional causes.

Brain Fog

Difficulty concentrating, struggling to make routine decisions, and forgetfulness can be tied to prolonged stress or anxiety.

Unexplained Physical Symptoms

Headaches, muscle tension, digestive issues, stomachaches, sensitivity to light or sound, and other physical symptoms aren’t always caused by a physical condition.

There’s Nothing Wrong with Seeking Help

These signs are your body’s warning system telling you that something may be a little off. Even if what you’re experiencing seems minor, there’s nothing wrong with taking steps early to prevent it from becoming serious. As with any health condition, the sooner you act, the better.
