Social Work Month was first celebrated in March of 1963 to support social workers and their mission – “to enhance human well-being, meet the basic human needs of all people, and put special attention on the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed and living in poverty.”
The ability of social workers to uplift, defend, and transform lives is needed more than ever. Demand for support from social workers has never been higher, with rising costs, social injustice, and lack of access to care and essential resources in many communities. At Oaks Integrated Care, we’re grateful for social workers who provide a safe space for people to speak openly without judgment. And we’ve seen the life-changing impact social workers have every single day.
As we honor social workers here at Oaks and across the country during Social Work Month, let’s highlight how they work on the front lines to uplift, defend, and transform people’s lives when they need it most.
Social Workers Uplift
Whether you’re going through a rough patch or facing a crisis, a social worker can give you hope. A social worker will meet you where you are, make sure you feel heard, and work with you to understand the underlying causes of negative thoughts and feelings. This is the first step to true healing and growth.
Social Workers Defend
Social workers look out for vulnerable and marginalized people. When human rights or access to healthcare, education, and other resources are threatened, social workers stand up for decency, fairness, and justice. You should never feel disrespected or discriminated against based on your race, gender, age, lifestyle, religion, culture, or personal views.
Social Workers Transform
The impact of social workers is seen in the resilience and progress of individuals and families, and through systemic change in communities. Behaviors change. Policies change. Challenges are overcome. Barriers to care and equity are removed. Real progress is made. This kind of transformation is due in large part to the support and dedication of social workers.
A social worker from our adult partial care program explains, “Social work is rewarding because we help individuals see their strengths and build resilience. You don’t always see the impact you make right away, but you always know the difference you are making matters.”
Whether you or a loved is struggling with anxiety or depression, facing discrimination, or having difficulty accessing assistance through social programs, the social workers at Oaks are here for you. Call 1-800-963-3377 for help.
