Family Preservation Services: Road to Reunification

2018-05-17T12:31:52-04:00May 17th, 2018|Categories: Oaks Blog|

Tom came to our Family Preservation Services (FPS) program as a broken man who lost his 7-year-old daughter Amber due to his chronic drug use. He was unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel until meeting a case worker in parenting class who reminded him that even though he was at the lowest point in his life and had lost his daughter, it did not make him a bad person or father. Parenting classes helped Tom think about how he was raised as a child and how he wanted to raise his own children, in a way that set them up for success as they grow. To work toward the ultimate goal of reunification, Tom [...]

Three Ways to Prevent Caregiver Burnout

2022-08-30T22:46:05-04:00May 10th, 2018|Categories: Oaks Blog, Home Page|

It is estimated that 65 million Americans provided caregiving duties in the past year. Many family members take on caregiving duties because they already have a relationship with the person in need and caregiving duties can often be provided at little to no cost. Family members also feel a sense of duty to care for their loved ones. The responsibility of caregiving is significant and can take a toll on the caregiver’s physical and emotional health. Caregivers may feel isolated or alone in their duties. Caregiving responsibilities may strain relationships, put financial pressure on the caregiver and cause stress to rise among family members. Caregivers are also more likely to experience depression, poor health habits, poor sleeping habits, stress [...]

The Benefits of Yoga in Treating Trauma

2023-11-15T14:18:50-05:00March 28th, 2018|Categories: Oaks Blog, Home Page|

A trauma can be defined as “an event, series of events, or set of circumstances experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening with lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being” (SAMHSA). Because the effects of trauma are stored in the body, specifically the nervous system and in the limbic system of the brain, traditional talk therapies are often not sufficient in successfully treating symptoms of trauma. Studies have shown that in addition to more Cognitive-Behavioral Based therapies, Body Based and Sensory-Motor Therapeutic Interventions have been proven to be necessary to the successful treatment of trauma. Yoga has long been a practice to integrate one’s body, mind, and [...]

Benefits of Exercise on Mental Health

2018-02-21T11:58:10-05:00February 21st, 2018|Categories: Oaks Blog, Home Page|

Medical professionals regularly recommend exercise to improve diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes. But exercise is not commonly a significant part of a treatment regimen for people who suffer from mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Research from the American Psychological Association indicates that modest amounts of exercise can make a difference. People who exercise regularly tend to do so because it gives them an enormous sense of well-being. They feel more energetic throughout the day, sleep better at night, have sharper memories and feel more relaxed and positive about themselves and their lives. The APA finds it’s also powerful medicine for many common mental health challenges such as: Depression Exercise is a powerful depression [...]
