Dear Oaks Family and Supporters, Please join us and other providers from across New Jersey by sharing the following calls to action! We are urging Congress to assure the Coronavirus Recovery Act includes funds for the recovery of private, nonprofit and public behavioral health entities that already are suffering the catastrophic effects of the outbreak. Shared by NJAMHAA: The individuals we serve are some of our most vulnerable residents. Our work is critical to their safety, health and wellness. Many do not have access to computers and other advanced technology and I ask that you assure that telephone services can be reimbursed through Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance plans as part of the response to the National Emergency. Help on the Street: Crisis Intervention Team and Justice Involved Services

2023-11-15T14:41:32-05:00December 19th, 2019|Categories: Oaks Blog, Featured|

For years, Oaks has partnered with law enforcement agencies to help improve the quality of first-responder interactions with persons living with mental health or addiction disorders. The Crisis Intervention Team, commonly referred to as “CIT,” is an innovative model first debuted in 1988 in Memphis, Tennessee. As mental health professionals, Director Renee Carrillo and her team at Oaks work with police and other partners to help reduce potentially harmful encounters between law enforcement and those with mental illness. Key elements of the program are educating police department personnel about how to handle these encounters, deescalating possibly tense or dangerous situations, and helping them find ways to cope with the stress and trauma they experience as part of their work. PTSD Awareness and Trauma Informed Care

2020-04-03T16:23:04-04:00July 1st, 2019|Categories: Oaks Blog|

June is PTSD Awareness Month and although it is drawing to a close, being aware of trauma is not a one-month activity. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, commonly called PTSD, has in the past twenty years or so become quite familiar in the public mind. It is most often associated with veterans and their wartime service, but they are not alone in experiencing PTSD. PTSD can affect anyone who has had significant traumatic experience such as serious accident, natural disaster, sudden death of a loved one, violent personal assault, rape, or life-threatening situation. Compounding the situation may be addiction or other coping mechanisms or other underlying conditions that also require treatment. Consider these facts: Annually, PTSD will directly [...]

Inspiring Women

2020-03-08T22:30:22-04:00March 29th, 2019|Categories: Home Page, Oaks Blog|

Not long ago, I had the pleasure to visit with Mary Wells, the founding director and visionary behind Oaks Integrated Care. Mary has been a mentor and inspiration for me since my earliest days at Oaks and I try to keep in touch with her. As I left her house, I thought about what a truly remarkable and accomplished person she is – and what a remarkable woman she is. I thought about her amazing efforts to start a social service organization and grow it into something so much more. And it caused me to connect Mary with so many other amazing, remarkable and accomplished women who have contributed to our community, nation and world. March is not only [...]

Oaks Earns Accreditation

2020-03-08T22:37:11-04:00January 25th, 2019|Categories: Oaks Blog|

In December, Oaks Integrated Care received exciting news – another set of our programs were accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International, an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services. A total of 41 programs representing ten service areas were peer-reviewed by a five-member accreditation team in October. The surveyors were on-site for three days. They reviewed person-served and staff records as well as agency policies and program manuals. They toured Oaks’ residences and facilities. They spoke with staff and interviewed our consumers/those who receive our services. “Oaks Integrated Care’s staff members are motivated, professional, caring, and well qualified for their positions with a trend toward long tenure. They approach the mission as [...]

Are You Sticking to Your New Year’s Resolution?

2020-03-08T22:38:39-04:00January 18th, 2019|Categories: Oaks Blog|

On January 1, so many of us kick off the year feeling full of energy, determination and motivation. Maybe you decided to join a gym, start meditating, throw out that bag of chips in your pantry, vow to stop smoking or even sign up for yoga classes. But now as the month moves along and reality sets in, millions of us will fail to achieve our New Year's resolution goals. You are not alone. In fact, over 80% of people who make New Year’s resolutions fail to achieve them. When we strive to reach unrealistic goals, we ultimately set ourselves up for failure. This sense of failure can have a negative impact on our overall mental and physical health [...]

Human Rights – It’s About Respect

2018-12-13T12:24:27-05:00December 13th, 2018|Categories: Oaks Blog, Home Page|

“I get no respect,” was a phrase made famous in the 1980s by the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield. Dangerfield would then recite a one-liner or an experience he had in which someone had “dissed” [disrespected] him, a punchline that usually ended with laughter at Rodney’s expense. Treating one another with respect, however, is no laughing matter. December marks both National and Universal Human Rights Month. December 10th is observed as Human Rights Day, the anniversary date of the adoption of the Declaration of Universal Human Rights by the United Nations. This year, this important document observes its 70th anniversary. Article I of the Declaration of Universal Human Rights states: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity [...]
