Celebrated every March, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month promotes the inclusion of all people and brings awareness to the daily obstacles faced by those living with developmental disabilities (DD). Our mission to provide children and adults with a full spectrum of programs and services to help them reach their full potential throughout each stage of life. This month, we are highlighting one of our empowering individuals who overcame obstacles and continues to achieve successes through our DD programs.puzzle inclusion

Lisa*, a young woman living with Autism, began her journey at Oaks with the Pat LeBon Day and Empowerment Program. Prior to her admission, she struggled with socialization and battled mental health challenges. Transitioning to a new program brought difficulties for Lisa, and she faced behavioral changes and aggression head-on during the start of her program. Recognizing this, Oaks staff altered their approach to better fit Lisa’s mental and behavioral health needs.

Now, two years later, Lisa reaches new goals in an encouraging and supportive environment. After a switch to one-on-one support programs with behavioral interventions, she is a proud part of the adult day program at Oaks. Lisa enjoys working on everyday tasks, such as keeping her room clean and organized with minimal assistance from staff. Additionally, Lisa thrives in her Individual Service Plan (ISP) with achievements in meal preparation and monetary management. Throughout her time with Oaks, she continues to progress in her social skills through coping skills and spending time with those in her community.

Despite the challenges of Covid-19, Lisa remains a shining example of success. She follows health and safety protocols daily with constant hand-washing and utilizing a mask at doctor visits and community outings. On a day-to-day basis, Lisa can be found walking around the park or going bowling. She is proudly working towards her current goal of obtaining employment.

Lisa’s story provides strength and optimism for individuals and families throughout all areas of DD. Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month reminds us to join together to form strong and diverse communities where everyone is included. Oaks believes in just that, promoting positive treatment of others through dignity and respect.

Oaks offers several programs for adults and children living with developmental disabilities including in-home services, day programs, supportive living, and group homes. Learn more about how to access services for your loved one.
